COCK-A-BENDY CASTLE

Cock-a-bendy Castle

Ask any local the directions to Plane Castle and they will probably say they don’t know but will tell you all about Cock-a-bendy Castle where they played as a child in the ruins.

The Barony of Plane was granted by King Robert to John D’Erth after his father William was killed at Bannockburn hence the name Plane Castle.

At the beginning of the 20th century

At the beginning of the 20th century the Castle was owned by the Menzies family who could only be described as a very colourful family know for their excessive nature. Thomas Menzies who lived at the castle until the late 1930’s was probably one of the most flamboyant of the family and was given the nickname of “cock-a-bendy” by the locals and the Castle has been known locally as Cock a Bendy ever since.
